Can Small Pets Eat Dark Chocolate (70-85% Cocoa)?
Dark chocolate is extremely dangerous for small pets such as hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Their tiny body mass means that even a fragment delivers a massive dose of theobromine and caffeine, triggering severe neurologic and cardiac signs, including tremors, seizures, and rapid death. Additionally, the high fat and sugar content disrupts delicate gut flora, especially in herbivores, leading to fatal gastrointestinal stasis. No amount of dark chocolate is safe.
