Protein in the Avian Diet
Protein requirements vary significantly among bird species. While most pet birds thrive on a base of high-quality pellets and seeds, supplemental protein can be beneficial, especially during molting, breeding, or recovery from illness. Hard-boiled eggs (including crushed shell for calcium), cooked lean chicken, and certain insects like mealworms are excellent protein sources for many species. However, seasoned, fried, or processed meats are dangerous due to salt, spices, and preservatives. Never offer raw meat to birds due to bacterial risks. The amount and type of protein needed depends on your bird's species — what works for a parrot may not suit a budgie. Use our database to verify any protein source for your specific bird type.
